Why E-COMMERCE and Streaming?
How else do you intend to pay for your business? At the time of this writing, e-Commerce is a major source of income for most internet companies. In the case of streaming, a general business plan for some companies is charge the customer a fee in order to see or hear the stream. Audible.com or IceBox.com are good examples of this type of structure. A user pays to listen to a reading, watch a video, or hear some music. This business model does not work all the time. If the stream is a necessity, then the consumer will pay the fee. Otherwise, on the internet, most consumers will be "turned off" by the demand for a fee.
Other business models use advertising. However, in the case of streaming, advertising will detract and draw visitors away from your site. For some websites, this distractionis counterproductive to the whole point of the media they intend to stream.
In the wake of the NAPSTER and SCOUR lawsuits and court decisions, more proprietary and copyrighted media will probably become more protected under future laws and acts. This will benefit streaming websites, as it will allow them to charge a fee for media which is either propreitary, copyrighted, exclusive, etc. Others that either distribute or facilitate the distribution of media for free (like Napster had) will face lawsuits. Probably in the future, they will also face punishment under the law, in the form of charges, fines, or even imprisonment. Licensing Content and digital rights management, can be used to prevent unauthorized copying and distribution of streaming media.
There are numerous types of internet based e-commerce platforms, such as: are 1 time credit card fees, e-cash services (including debit accounts), intermediate e-commerce firms, etc.
Pricing structures are very important in considering an e-commerce platform. A one time set-up fee to be charged is an easy task for any programmer familiar with e-commerce. A complicated, multi-layered system of various charges, items, account/customer information, discounts, etc. is something that requires alot of planning and personnel. (See Amazon.com and you'll see a complicated, but very well run e-commerce system). You will need to decide what exactly you intend to do first before communicating with the companies below.
